Hurley adopts environmental policy for town purchases

Under the new policy, bid documents would give preference to products and services that reduce harmful environmental impacts.

Issues for officials to consider under the policy include:

• Giving priority to products that have been processed using recycled materials.

• Increasing the amount of purchases from local vendors and service providers to reduce transportation demands.

• Avoiding wood products from lumber that was not harvested in an environmentally sustainable manner.

• Considering the amount of packaging used for projects and whether biodegradable materials are used.

• Avoiding products or services that have a high health risks to people during the manufacturing process. In particular are products that contain chlorine, PVC or emit unhealthy levels of chemicals during use.
