A Change of the Guard in Hurley by Maya Schubert/Kingston Wire
Just 34 votes ahead of incumbent Democrat/One Hurley candidate Melinda McKnight, Councilman Mike Boms, a Democrat running on the Republican and Keep Hurley Hurley lines, appears to be the winner of the Hurley town supervisor’s race.
As of Tuesday night, Boms led the race at 1,202 votes to McKnight’s 1,168, a 50.72 percent to 49.28 percent margin. All results are unofficial.
The two town board seats up for grabs were snagged by Republican Diana Cline, with 1,233 votes, and incumbent Democrat Gregory Simpson, with 1,204 votes. Deputy Supervisor Peter Humphries lost re-election to the board with 1,079 votes. Republican candidate William Mayhon III trailed with 993.
Incumbent Democrat Annie Reed was re-elected town clerk (1,201 votes) over Republican Tracy Kellogg (1,138 votes). Incumbent Highway Superintendent Mike Shultis ran uncontested, garnering 2,061 votes, as did Democrat Town Justice Roy Hochberg (1,306) and Republican Town Justice John E. Parker (1,193) for the two open judgeships.
The Ulster County Board of Elections' last date to receive absentee ballots, postmarked on or before Nov. 7, is Nov. 22. The BOE will certify the results on Dec. 2.
According to BOE Commissioner Ashley Torres, the Hurley supervisor’s race is not within the mandatory recount zone as the metrics for recount are a victory of 20 votes or less, or a victory of 0.5 percent or less.
“Right now, the percentage margin of victory is 1.48 [percent],” she said.
Torres said 18 absentee ballots from the Town of Hurley were counted on Wednesday and three on Thursday. The BOE is closed today in observance of Veterans’ Day.
