Memorial Day Parade, Ceremony in Hurley

by Maya Schubert/Kingston Wire

On Monday morning, the Town of Hurley will join the nation in
remembering our fallen service members with an annual Memorial Day
parade. The one and a half mile parade route, which starts at THikit
print shop on Zandhoek Road, winds around the Hurley Cemetery, crosses
Hurley Avenue and travels down Main Street before ending in front of
the Town Hall on Wamsley Place. Beverages and hot dogs will be
provided at the Town Hall, and a ceremony will follow the parade.

This year’s parade grand marshal will be World War II Navy veteran Ron
Gibbons Sr. A Gloversville native, Gibbons was drafted in June 1945
and assigned to the USS Hornet aircraft carrier as a fireman first
class. After the war, he continued to serve in the Navy and later
attended Rider College in New Jersey and Champlain College in
Plattsburgh. He moved to Ulster County to work for IBM, and now, at 95
years old, has lived in Hurley with his wife Mary for the past 62
years.

Though retired from IBM since 1990, Gibbons has worked at the Lowe’s
in the Town of Ulster for the past 15 years.

“If you sit, you’re going to vegetate,” Gibbons said. “You have to keep moving.”

When not working in Lowe’s garden department, Gibbons is kept busy by
his four adult children and a flock of grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.

Gibbons will be in the grand marshal vehicle close to the helm of the
parade. Ahead of Gibbons will be the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Boy
Scouts and Hurley’s elected officials. The Hurley, West Hurley and
Spring Lake fire departments will follow Gibbons, along with
representatives from Hurley Senior Citizens, the Heritage Society,
Hurley Library and a plethora of local organizations. Kingston High
School’s drumline and color guard will keep the parade in marching
order, and the Heritage Society Museum will sell baked goods on its
front lawn and provide coffee and water to passing parade-goers.

The parade will step off at 10 a.m. For parade details, go to
