Town Board votes to withdraw proposed moratorium

The Hurley Town Board voted on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, to withdraw its proposed nine-month moratorium on certain types of development in the town.

The vote, taken immediately after a second public hearing on the matter, was unanimous, 5-0.

“Over the course of the two hearings about the proposal, it became clear that Hurley residents did not favor a moratorium being enacted,” Town Supervisor Melinda McKnight said after Tuesday evening's Town Board meeting. “We took their comments to heart and deferred to their judgment.”

McKnight also reiterated a statement she first made in November 2022 that the Hurley government is not anti-development; rather, it aims “to make well-conceived proposals better and ensure that ill-conceived proposals do not come to fruition without being improved significantly.”

“The town will continue to monitor development proposals in Hurley,” McKnight said Tuesday. “And it will act in accordance with local laws to ensure that proposed projects serve the best interests of our residents.”
